Are you investing as much in your existing clients as you are in winning new ones?

Winning new business matters. Generating leads, building a healthy pipeline and attracting new customers will always be an important part of business growth.

But there’s another question worth asking:

Are you investing the same level of thought and attention in the clients you’ve already worked hard to win?

Many organisations invest significant time and resources in winning new clients, but the relationships they already have can hold just as much opportunity.

What happens after the sale?

Think about the energy that goes into winning a new client. Their needs are explored, conversations are frequent and relationships are developed.

Then the contract is signed.

In some organisations, there’s a clear client journey and a proactive approach to ongoing engagement. In others, things can gradually become more reactive.

You might recognise some of these:

  • Communication happens mainly when there’s an issue or update.

  • Onboarding is inconsistent.

  • Clients don’t fully understand or use the products or services available to them.

  • Customer feedback isn’t consistently captured or acted upon.

  • Opportunities to strengthen or develop the relationship are missed.

  • Important conversations happen only when renewal is approaching.

None of these necessarily means you have poor client relationships. But they may suggest that client engagement is happening rather than being actively managed.

Why client engagement matters

Effective client engagement goes beyond providing good customer service.

It means understanding what your clients need, what they value, the challenges they’re facing and what they’re trying to achieve.

That understanding allows you to become more proactive.

You can identify potential issues before they become bigger problems, make customer value part of the ongoing conversation and recognise opportunities to support clients as their needs change.

And there are clear business benefits.

Stronger client engagement can contribute to:

  • Improved client retention.

  • Greater customer value.

  • Increased use of your products and services.

  • Stronger client relationships.

  • Referrals and advocacy.

  • New opportunities within existing accounts.

  • Better customer insight to inform business improvement.

Developing existing client relationships isn’t simply about selling more.

It’s about creating greater value for both sides of the relationship.

How well do you really know your clients?

A useful starting point is to look at your organisation through the eyes of your customers.

Ask yourself:

How consistent is our client experience?

Are we proactive in our client relationships, or mainly reactive?

Do our clients understand the full value they receive from working with us?

Are we using customer feedback to improve what we do?

Do we recognise when a relationship is becoming disengaged or at risk?

Are we identifying opportunities to develop the relationships we already have?

And perhaps the most interesting question:

If we asked our clients how engaged they feel with our organisation, would their answer match ours?

Don’t just focus on your next client

Winning new business will always matter. But sustainable business growth doesn’t have to come solely from finding the next customer.

There may already be considerable opportunity within the clients you serve today.

So alongside asking:

“How can we win more clients?”

Perhaps there’s another question worth asking:

“How much more value could we create by better understanding and developing the clients we already have?”
